The Mumbai Indians completed a remarkable comeback win against the Kings XI Punjab thanks mainly to Ambati Rayudu’s (34*) clean hitting and Robin Peterson’s (16*) ingenuity with the bat.

Chasing 169, the Mumbai Indians began in a sedate manner. Openers Sachin Tendulkar (34) and James Franklin (22) couldn’t quite get after the KXIP bowlers. The away side kept the scoreboard ticking but not at the required rate. While a 50-run partnership from the openers gave MI a solid foundation, the home side had other ideas. Azhar Mahmood made the ball talk right from the get-go and accounted for both the openers after bowling just seven balls.

The visitors needed quick runs, but KXIP were bowling with intent. Dinesh Karthik’s (3) dismissal made things worse for MI. The wicketkeeper-batsman gifted a catch to Mahmood off a Piyush Chawla delivery. The Mumbai Indians’ hopes were now pinned on the big-hitting Kieron Pollard and the mercurial Rohit Sharma. Pollard (3) couldn’t do justice to his talent after he holed out at deep midwicket off Parvinder Awana to reduce the away side to 90 for four.

Sharma (50) and Ambati Rayudu led the MI comeback, with the former getting to his half-century with a six off Awana. The KXIP pacer got his own back the very next delivery as he dismissed the MI right-hander. Awana wasn’t finished yet, and Harbhajan Singh (0) became his second victim of the over after lobbing one to long-off. Just when it seemed like the Kings would cruise their way to a win, Robin Peterson and Rayudu combined to plunder 27 runs off the 19th over bowled by Piyush Chawla. With just five required off the last over, MI completed a remarkable comeback to win the match by four wickets and a ball to spare.

Stand-in skipper David Hussey won the toss and decided to bat first. Openers Nitin Saini (17) and Mandeep Singh (22) made the lacklustre MI bowling attack pay early on. Singh looked particularly impressive with his consistent attacking strokes. But RP Singh got the 20-year-old right-hander to nick one straight into Dinesh Karthik’s gloves. Saini was the next to depart as Clint McKay’s short ball was too much to handle for the KXIP opener. At 46 for two, the home side needed their go-to guy, Shaun Marsh, to fire. The Aussie began his innings with a crisp boundary. Unfortunately for KXIP, that wasn’t a sign of things to come as James Franklin dismissed Marsh for 17.

David Hussey (68*) took on the mantle to score big and he succeeded. His controlled aggression proved to be the perfect strategy to unsettle the MI bowling attack. South African David Miller (34*) provided adequate support to make sure the home side didn’t capitulate. The duo put on an impressive unbeaten 89-run partnership to ensure that KXIP posted a battling total of 168 for three.

Mumbai were 32 behind with two overs to go, so that win is quite incredible. David Hussey will have to take some of the blame for putting an off-spinner in for the 19th over. To be fair, the Australian can't have expected Petersen to start switch hitting everything. A tremendous win for Harbhajan Singh's side that shores up their chase for a playoff spot. Poor Kings Xi though find themselves second bottom of the table.

  • Hussey: "Fantastic game of cricket, they played pretty nicely. I thought we had enough, but in the last couple of overs anything can happen in T20 cricket, and anything did."

Propelled by Rohit Sharma’s magnificent double-century, India marched to a 153-run win in Kolkata. While Eden Gardens celebrated 150 years, Rohit lit-up the stadium with a well paced 264 off 173 to make the occasion memorable.
