MI v KXIP - MATCH28(22-4-2012) - Full Highlights
IPL 2012: Match 28, Mumbai Indians v Kings XI Punjab
Mumbai Indian captain Harbhajan Singh and Kings XI Punjab player David Hussey during the toss for the match 28 of the Indian Premier League ( IPL) 2012 between The Mumbai Indians and the Kings X1 Punjab held at the Wankhede Stadium in Mumbai on the 22nd April 2012
Shaun Marsh once again proved he is the lynchpin of the Kings XI Punjab batting. As his
team chased a tricky 164 against the Mumbai Indians’ formidable attack, Marsh anchored
KXIP home by six wickets with an unbeaten 68 (40 balls). He took the game away with a six
off the first delivery of the final over, before David Miller completed the win with a
comfortable double.
For the beleaguered MI, Sachin Tendulkar’s return to the team brought neither luck nor
runs. The champion batsman got a start and got out. With the exception of James Franklin,
none of the batsmen came to the party.
They missed the services of Lasith Malinga terribly
as his replacement Thisara Perera couldn’t take the pressure of bowling the final over.
Kieron Pollard (4-0-14-2) was the only sharp performer with the ball as the rest of the
experienced MI bowling attack went for more than eight runs per over.
Two young domestic Indian players, Nitin Saini and Mandeep Singh, got KXIP’s chase off to
a solid start with a 48-run stand. But Pollard struck to spoil their party by dismissing
Mandeep (24 off 21 balls). Shaun Marsh then took over the baton, and was shortly joined by
his fellow Australian, David Hussey, who departed after a sedate 21 (19 balls) and a 58-
run partnership.
Marsh continued to hold the innings together even as KXIP needed 45 off the final five
overs. Partnering with Hussey, and then, with Miller, he combined calmness with aggression
to play some fine shots for his five fours and three sixes.
After MI elected to bat first, James Franklin was in his element as he batted his way to a
glorious 79 off 51 balls. He opened the batting with Tendulkar, and together, they put up
a stand of 51 runs. The momentum shifted completely when Tendulkar was out after scoring a
run-a-ball 23. Rohit Sharma followed him into the hut shortly afterwards. Dinesh Karthik
played a fine cameo of 35 (20 balls) that included five boundaries.
When Karthik was run-out in the 16th over, MI had 131 runs on board. But Praveen Kumar
struck off consecutive balls in the 19th over to dismiss Franklin and Harbhajan Singh (4).
Soon, Kieron Pollard (7) was snapped up by Parvinder Awana. This mini-collapse ensured
that MI added only 34 runs in their last five overs.
Awana was the pick of the KXIP bowlers with figures of 4-0-23-2, followed by Praveen Kumar
(4-0-36-2), who took his share of wickets, but was expensive.
Man-of-the-Match: Shaun Marsh for anchoring KXIP’s chase with an unbeaten 68 off 40 balls
(5x4; 3x6)
David Hussey will be delighted to win that. His side fielded fantastically to limit Mumbai's total, and then a fantastic innings from Stuart Marsh carried the Punjab side over the line. Mumbai looked like a fractured team, and two defeats on the trot won't help the mood in the side.
- Hussey: "Our bowling and fielding did a great job. Our boys wanted to put on a show at the home of Indian Cricket."
- Harbhajan: "If we had fielded as well as they had, I think the result would have gone the other way"
