Chennai Super Kings put up an all-round show to beat the Pune Warriors India by 13 runs at the MA Chidambaram Stadium here at Chepauk. After half-centuries from Subramaniam Badrinath and Faf du Plessis took the hosts to 164 for five, the bowlers, led by Nuwan Kulasekara (two for 10) and Dwayne Bravo (two for 28), helped deliver the win for CSK.

Put in to bat first, CSK had a new opening pair as Subramaniam Badrinath walked out with Faf du Plessis to kick start the home team’s innings. The combination worked as Badrinath and du Plessis gave the hosts a steady start, reaching the 50-run mark in 7.4 overs.

du Plessis was the more aggressive of the pair initially. The South Africa batsman brought up his half-century first, off just 42 deliveries. Badrinath, however, soon caught up with his opening partner as he smashed Bhuvneshwar Kumar for three successive boundaries in the 15th over to reach his half-century in the same number of deliveries as du Plessis.

After both the openers brought up their respective half-centuries, a first in IPL 2012, it was PWI who struck next. Marlon Samuels had both batsmen dismissed in similar fashion – caught by Angelo Mathews running in from deep square-leg – in the space of three deliveries in the 16th over. du Plessis made 58, while Badrinath made 57. CSK were 116 for two at the fall of the latter’s wicket.

The visitors took three more wickets in the last four overs to slow CSK’s surge towards the end of their innings. But with captain MS Dhoni striking a feisty 28* (3x4, 1x6) off just 12 deliveries, the hosts finished at a competitive 164 for five in 20 overs.

PWI wobbled during most of their run-chase. Robin Uthappa (8) and Jesse Ryder (9) were sent back by Nuwan Kulasekara before the fourth over had been completed. Manish Pandey (13) fell to Dwayne Bravo in the seventh over, while Sourav Ganguly (24) was out caught trying to play a big shot off Shadab Jakati. 64 for four in 9.4 overs deteriorated to 97 for five in 13.2 overs when Ravichandran Ashwin had the dangerous Marlon Samuels (26 off 24 balls) caught by Kulasekara at short cover.

Pune, nevertheless, threatened to edge CSK as Steven Smith and Angelo Mathews stitched together a quick 44-run partnership in five overs. However, with 24 required off the last 11 deliveries, Smith (23 off 21 balls) was caught at long-on off Doug Bollinger, thereby decisively turning the game in the home team’s favour.

Dwayne Bravo knocked over Mathews’ stumps in the first ball of the 20th over as CSK managed to restrict PWI to 151; 13 runs short of the winning score.

The win leaves both teams with six points from as many games.

Chennai Super Kings win by 13 runs

Pune just couldn't get over the line thanks so superb death bowling from Bollinger, Bravo & Jadeja. Their batsmen plugged away but just couldn't get the ball across the rope enough to complete the chase.

  • Dhoni: "It was a target that was pretty achievable, the dew made it hard especially for our spinners. It was very important to be aggressive and we took some great catches today to get early wickets. The death bowling was great in this game and we hope to continue this into the next game."
  • Ganguly: "It was the sort of game where we needed a big over which didn't happy. We lost wickets early on but we just couldn't get that 15/20 run over. We will look at it after the game."
