Report: Warm-up: Cricket Australia XI vs Indians - Day 1

 The Indians finished Day one of the first warm-up match against Cricket Australia XI on 55 for 1, trailing by 164 runs.

After the bowlers, led by Varun Aaron (17-1-72-3), dismissed the hosts for 219 runs, the Indians lost Shikhar Dhawan (10 off 20 balls) early.
Murali Vijay smashed four fours in his unbeaten 32 off 50 balls. Cheteshwar Pujara accompanied him at the other end with 13 to his name inclusive of three fours.

On the sunny but windy morning at the Gliderol Stadium in Adelaide, CA XI captain, Ashton Turner, won the toss and elected to bat first.
Bhuvneshwar Kumar struck an early blow by scalping Matthew Short caught behind for a duck.

After a brief partnership for the third wicket, Aaron struck twice in the 21st over. He got Turner to nick one to Wriddhiman Saha behind the wicket. The next ball, a close lbw appeal was turned down but Aaron got his man, Nick Stevens, off the following delivery. Stevens was bowled through the gate.

Indian spinners, R Ashwin and Karn Sharma, had a short burst of four overs each before Lunch. Ryan Carters (58) and Kelvin Smith (40) saw CA XI through to Lunch with the team score on 78 for 3.

The lunch break, however, opened the doors for the Indians, who pegged away with wickets.

Bhuvneshwar struck the fourth blow to the hosts by getting Smith to prod forward and nick one to Shikhar at first slip.

Meanwhile, Carters – the most experienced batsman of the opposition – held on for a sedate 58 (151 balls) before being caught down the leg-side by Saha off Ashwin’s bowling.

Aaron returned to bounce Alex Gregory out and give Saha his fourth catch of the innings. Aaron bowled a streak of fiery bouncers at probing pace. Mohammad Shami followed suit and got Jonte Pattison to top-edge one in a failed attempt to hook. Saha held a fine running catch to complete his fifer of catches behind the wicket.

The Indian pacers pitched most balls back-of-a-length and extracted generous bounce off the wicket.

Karn Sharma took about five overs to gain rhythm before trapping David Moody lbw with a wrong’un. The confidence was boosted and his eighth over was a maiden.

The Indians had taken nine CA XI wickets for 167 runs but it took them some doing to break the frustrating last wicket stand between Harry Nielsen and Harry Conway. The tenacious duo tried to hit out and refused to get out. They added 52 runs before Karn got Conway stumped to end the CA XI innings at 219 in 71.1 overs.

Saha finished with five catches and a stumping to his name.

Propelled by Rohit Sharma’s magnificent double-century, India marched to a 153-run win in Kolkata. While Eden Gardens celebrated 150 years, Rohit lit-up the stadium with a well paced 264 off 173 to make the occasion memorable.
