Chasing just 140, CSK started on a very lucky note as Michael Hussey was put down not once but thrice by Kieron Pollard at point off Johnson in the very first over. Johnson then struck thrice to demolish the CSK top order. He bowled Murali Vijay (2) first before Suresh Raina (0) was caught spectacularly by Pollard. Subramaniam Badrinath (0) was third to be dismissed as he was trapped leg before wicket. Dwayne Bravo (9) counter-attacked with consecutive boundaries off Pawan Suyal before he was caught by Ambati Rayudu to leave CSK reeling at 18 for 4.

The move to promote Ravichandran Ashwin (2) backfired as he was bowled by Harbhajan Singh. Pragyan Ojha then had Hussey (22) caught by Dwayne Smith in the deep. At the halfway stage, CSK were 48 for 6, still needing 92 runs. Ojha then dismissed the dangerous MS Dhoni (10) before Lasith Malinga bowled Chris Morris (1). Mohit Sharma (0) followed caught by Suyal. Ravindra Jadeja (20) was dropped on 11 by Pollard but Ojha eventually dismissed him as CSK were bundled out for 79.

Earlier MI won the toss and elected to bat. MI openers Sachin Tendulkar and Smith started cautiously. Tendulkar smashed Mohit Sharma for a boundary before depositing him for a six in the 6th over as MI made 32 from the Power Play. Ravindra Jadeja was hit for a six by Smith, but Jadeja came back to trap Tendulkar (15) leg before wicket. Bravo sent back Smith (22) caught off his own bowling. The dangerous Pollard (1) who was put down on 0 by Bravo was caught by Raina off Jadeja.

Dinesh Karthik (23) hit Jadeja for two boundaries and a six before holing out in the deep. Ashwin then bowled Ambati Rayudu (10) to leave MI five down. Harbhajan got off the mark hitting Ashwin into the stands. Rohit Sharma (39*) smashed Ben Laughlin for a massive six in the 18th over. The last over bowled by Laughlin was taken for 19 runs as Harbhajan (25*) and Rohit Sharma added 57 runs in 4.5 overs. MI finished at 139 for 5.

Presentation:

Rohit: "It was an important game and a very good win. We didn’t want to put too much pressure on ourselves and we are very happy with the result. I thought 140 was a decent target as the wicket was a bit dry and the ball wasn’t coming on to the bat. Taking regular wickets was crucial and we did enough for the win. Mitchell Johnson has been great at giving us these breakthroughs and today’s been a perfect day. The way Pollard came back and took that catch off Raina shows the depth of character he has. We’re going to take each game as it comes and try to perform to our best."

Dhoni: "I thought we restricted them to a good score. We were confident we could get them. I think we got a bit complacent and mentally we weren’t fully with the match. It’s been a good wake-up call and I am glad it’s happened with so many games left. The wicket didn’t suit big strokes and it was bowler friendly. They did well to take wickets at regular intervals and just didn’t do what we needed with the bat."
