This match was the 122^nd between India and Pakistan – 28^th on Indian soil.

This was only the second match between these two sides at Chennai.

Bhuvneshwar Kumar became the 194^th player to represent India in one-day internationals.

After playing a record 27 consecutive day-night matches, India were playing their first day one-day international. India’s last day ODI was against England at Lord’s in 2011 that ended in a thrilling tie. The last day game for India at home soil was against New Zealand at Vadodara in 2010.

India were reduced to 29 for five – their second worst start at home and fourth worst in all ODIs.

The first four Indian batsmen were all dismissed bowled – the first time this happened to India in ODIs.

Rohit Sharma has now aggregated 17 runs in his last six ODIs. His scores: 5, 0, 0, 4, 4 (vs Sri Lanka) and 4 (vs Pakistan)

MS Dhoni and R Ashwin added 125 runs for the seventh wicket without being separated. This is India’s highest seventh wicket partnership against any opponent. The previous highest was 102 between Hemang Badani and Ajit Agarkar against Australia at Melbourne in 2004. Incidentally, India’s previous highest seventh wicket partnership against Pakistan was 89 (unbroken) between Yashpal Sharma and Syed Kirmani at Gujranwala in 1982.

The above partnership was also the third highest for the seventh wicket for any side in ODIs.

MS Dhoni (113*) made his eighth ODI hundred in his 212^th match. He had last scored a hundred against Bangladesh at Mirpur in January 2010 – 56 matches ago!

Dhoni’s 113* was his fifth ODI hundred as a captain. Only Sourav Ganguly (11) and Sachin Tendulkar (6) have scored more hundreds as a captain than Dhoni for India.

Dhoni’s 113* is now the highest score by an Indian captain against Pakistan. The previous best was 101 by Mohammad Azharuddin at Toronto in 1998.

Dhoni’s 113* is now the highest score by an Indian at No.7. The previous best was Mohammad Kaif’s 111* against Zimbabwe at Colombo RPS in 2002.

India recovered from 29/5 to 227/6 – adding 198/1. This is the second best recovery for any side, which lost its first 5 wickets for 30 runs or less. Interestingly, the record is held by India. They were 17/5 against Zimbabwe at Tunbridge Wells in the 1983 World Cup, but recovered to 266/8 – an addition of 249 runs for 3 wickets!

Junaid Khan’s 4 for 43 are the best bowling figures by a Pakistan bowler making his first appearance against India. The previous best was 3 for 22 by Arshad Khan at Jaipur in 1999.

Bhuvneshwar Kumar had a dream start to his ODI debut as he took a wicket off his very first ball in one-day internationals by bowling Mohammad Hafeez out. He became only the second Indian bowler to take a wicket off his very first ball in ODIs, after Sadagoppan Ramesh who did so against West Indies at Singapore in 1999.

Bhuvneshwar had also taken a wicket off his sixth ball in Twenty20 Internationals (victim – Nasir Jamshed). He thus became the first Indian to take a wicket in his first overs both in ODIs and T20Is.

Misbah-ul-Haq completed his 3000 runs in one-day internationals when his score reached 5. He became the 16^thPakistani and 122^nd batsman in the world to do so.

Misbah is only the third batsman to score 3000 runs without ever scoring a hundred. Interestingly, all three are from Pakistan – Wasim Akram (3717), Moin Khan (3266) and Misbah-ul-Haq (3011).

Nasir Jamshed (101*) scored his second ODI hundred. Both have come against India.

Jamshed against India in ODIs: 53* at Karachi on 02-06-2008, 118 at Mirpur on 18-03-2012 and 101* in this game.

This win was Pakistan’s third in consecutive matches at Chennai. They had beaten India by 35 runs in 1997 (ODI), by 12 runs in 1999 (Test) and by 6 wickets in 2012 (ODI).

MS Dhoni won his 17^th Man of the Match award. However, it was first time he won an award in a losing cause.

Nasir Jamshed: "It was a tough start when we lost Hafeez off the first ball, but we played out the tough period and now we are confident in this series."

Misbah-ul-Haq: "It was really good toss to win and the spell by Junaid Khan was very good. He has done it before in a Test match in Sri Lanka. Good to see that the bowlers pitched in the right areas in helping conditions. There was a change in the nature of the pitch. It was more difficult to play in the first half, very well played by Dhoni. But Nasir played an extremely good knock and showed the way by finishing the game. Humidity was a factor as both teams found it hard. Credit must be given to both teams' fast bowlers for bowling in such conditions."

MS Dhoni is the Man of the Match for his hundred. He says,"Bad toss to lose, but I am happy with my batting. There was something for the fast bowlers, but they also pitched it in the right areas. Once we lost five wickets, it was difficult to come back. We delayed the slog to get to a respectable score. 227 was a good score from where we were, but not enough in the end. The wicket got better later and our part-timers struggled."
