India v New Zealand-2012,2nd Test:Day 2 - Highlights

After coming out on top on Day 1, the New Zealand batsmen folded quickly on Day 2 of the two-Test series against hosts India. Pragyan Ojha, who added a wicket to his overnight tally of four victims, recorded his third five-for in his 16-match career. Meanwhile, the Indian batsmen, who were initially cornered, came out on top later on in the day.

The hosts’ charge was led by Virat Kohli, who was well supported by skipper MS Dhoni, as both batsmen remained unbeaten at stumps. The young Delhi batsman ended the day on 93*, and will be eyeing his second Test hundred on Day 3 of the match. Here are some interesting statistics from a day that eventually went in favour of the Indian batsmen:

• Pragyan Ojha (5/99) captured his third five-wicket haul in Test cricket – his first against New Zealand. His previous best figures against New Zealand were four for 107 at Ahmedabad in 2010-11.

• After 16 Tests, Ojha’s wicket tally stands at 73 (he can, of course, add to this tally in the second innings). Only two bowlers – Anil Kumble (84) and Erapalli Prasanna (79) – had taken more wickets for India after 16 Tests. Incidentally, Dilip Doshi’s 57 wickets are the most by an Indian left-arm spinner in 16 Tests, after Ojha’s 73 (so far).

• In two consecutive innings, New Zealand have lost five wickets to lbw decisions, which incidentally are the most batsmen lost by New Zealand in an innings in this fashion against India.

• Gautam Gambhir (2) has now not scored a Test hundred in 32 months. His last hundred was 116 against Bangladesh in January 2010. Since then, he has aggregated 1044 runs in 39 innings at an average of 28.21.

• Sachin Tendulkar (17) was dismissed bowled for the 50th time in his Test career. He became the third batsman after Rahul Dravid (55) and Allan Border (53) to get out bowled 50 times.

• Doug Bracewell became 150th bowler to dismiss Tendulkar in Test cricket. Incidentally, his uncle John Bracewell had also dismissed Tendulkar at Christchurch in 1989-90.

• This, however, is not the first instance of Tendulkar playing against two generations of players. He played against Geoff Marsh in 1991-92 and then against Shaun Marsh in 2011-12.

• Virat Kohli (93*) provided the 27th instance of an Indian batsman remaining unbeaten in nineties in Test cricket – first such instance for him. Sunil Gavaskar has done so four times – most for an Indian batsman. Ajit Wadekar (in 1967-68 v Australia), Sachin Tendulkar (in 1993-94 v Sri Lanka) and Gautam Gambhir (in 2005 v Zimbabwe) are the three Indians who failed to reach a hundred the following day after remaining unbeaten in nineties on the previous day.

• Virat Kohli (93*) scored his fourth consecutive fifty on home soil. His scores in India are: 52 and 63 against the West Indies at Mumbai in November 2011, 58 against New Zealand at Hyderabad and now, 93*.

• In 2012, Kohli has aggregated 1587 runs in 25 international matches (Tests, ODIs and T20Is) at an average of 66.12. Only Kumar Sangakkara has scored more (1732) runs than Kohli in international cricket this year.

• Suresh Raina (55 off 90 balls) has registered his seventh fifty in Tests - his first fifty against New Zealand.

• Raina's above innings is his second half-century in nine innings in India - his highest is 86 against Australia at Mohali in 2010-11.

• Interestingly, no other Indian batsman has aggregated 1000 runs in international cricket this year. Gautam Gambhir – with 997 runs – is the second-highest run-scorer for India this year.

• MS Dhoni’s two sixes took his career tally to 64 sixes. Among Indian batsmen, only Virender Sehwag (87) and Sachin Tendulkar (67) have hit more sixes than Dhoni in Test s.

• Dhoni’s 64 sixes are the second most by any wicketkeeper in Test cricket after Adam Gilchrist’s 100 sixes.

• 37 of Dhoni’s sixes have come as a captain – the most by any Indian. Only Brian Lara (49), Clive Lloyd (48) and Viv Richards (46) have hit more sixes than Dhoni in a captain’s role in Test cricket. Ricky Ponting also hit 37 sixes as captain.

Propelled by Rohit Sharma’s magnificent double-century, India marched to a 153-run win in Kolkata.
