The Kolkata Knight Riders beat the Pune Warriors India by 34 runs to seal the No. 2 spot in the points table. The men in purple will now stay back in Pune and play the Delhi Daredevils at the Subrata Roy Sahara Stadium on May 22.

After opting to bat first, KKR skipper Gautam Gambhir (10) was the first to depart with 21 runs on the board. Jacques Kallis (13), who replaced him at the crease, was sent back by Michael Clarke a while later. With two of the mainstays of the Knight Riders’ line-up back in the dugout, Shakib Al Hasan joined Brendon McCullum in the middle.

KKR had 45 runs on the board at the end of the 10th over, and hey took the attack to the bowlers in the 12th over. While McCullum began the onslaught with two boundaries off Nehra, Shakib went after Michael Clarke in the 13th over. The duo collected 20 runs off the Australian captains last over. Shakib, who got a couple of lives, made PWI pay for these mistakes. The batsman made their intent known as they milked the bowlers. The 67-run partnership ended after the timeout. After being brought back into the attack, Wayne Parnell claimed McCullum for 41.

In the next over, Bhuvneshwar Kumar followed up with the wicket of Shakib. The 21-year-old pacer castled the southpaw for 42. Manoj Tiwary and Yusuf Pathan then took KKR to 136 with a 19-run unbroken partnership.

Robin Uthappa struck Lakshmipathy Balaji for a four off the first ball of the PWI innings – other than Jesse Ryder’s two sixes, this was the only other hit to the fence during the home side’s batting. Uthappa (8) perished in the third over, giving KKR an early breakthrough. In the next over, Jesse Ryder hit Shakib for a six over mid-wicket and then sent Iqbal Abdulla over the long-on boundary in the following over.

Later, Yusuf Pathan struck to end the promising partnership between Clarke and Ryder. The off-spinner had the Australian stumped off a wide for 13. In his next over, the all-rounder, who has had an ordinary season so far, bowled Ryder for 22. Soon, Shakib trapped Sourav Ganguly (5) lbw. With PWI’s top four gone for 62 runs in the 11th over, the match was evenly poised.

With the asking rate climbing up, Anustup Majumdar was removed by Shakib, with the score at 86 for five. In the next over, a brilliant running catch at long on by Kallis, near the boundary off Rajat Bhatia, dismissed Callum Ferguson (12).

With 42 required off 13 balls and three wickets in hand, Bhuvneshwar Kumar came out to bat. Then in the penultimate over, a superb fielding effort by substitute fielder Laxmi Ratan Shukla saw the back of Parnell (3). But by then, the target was out PWI’s reach, ended up scoring 102 for eight in their 20 overs. This 34-run drubbing was PWI’s ninth straight loss of IPL 2012, which is a new league record for consecutive losses.

Man-of-the-Match: Shakib Al Hasan for his all-round performance that saw him score 42 runs off 30 balls and clock bowling figures of 4-0-18-2

Kolkata Knight Riders win by 34 runs

  • Gambhir: We wanted to finish in the top 2, we play Delhi now and helps us two cracks. We were discussing before this game to treat this as the quarter-finals and win the next three matches to win the IPL.
  • Ganguly: It has been a tough season, a young franchise, we've struggled with the pitch. We need to deal with it and get better. We need to get away from this, there's no point in having post-mortems straightaway, lot of things to do, get the right side. I haven't thought about my own plans.
