Match Referee Ranjan Madugalle looks on as Pune Warriors India captain Sourav Ganguly calls and Kings XI Punjab captain Adam Gilchrist tosses the coin during match 14 of the the Indian Premier League ( IPL) 2012 between The Kings X1 Punjab and The Pune Warriors India held at the Punjab Cricket Association Stadium, Mohali on the 12th April 2012

Dimitri Mascarenhas took five for 25 and Shaun Marsh struck an unbeaten 64 as Kings XI Punjab registered their first win of DLF IPL 2012 against the Pune Warriors India. After asking the visitors to bat first, the hosts bowled PWI out for a paltry score of 115 after which, KXIP brought up the winning score comfortably in 17.4 overs.

It was an ordinary batting display by PWI, who lost their first game of the competition. Jesse Ryder (7) was run-out in the third over. After that, Mascarenhas’ double strike off successive deliveries in the sixth over sent Sourav Ganguly (16) and Marlon Samuels (2) back to the dug-out. This left the visitors reeling at 29 for three in 5.4 overs.

Harmeet Singh struck next for the home team when he had Angelo Mathews (11) trapped lbw in the ninth over. Mascarenhas then took three of the last six wickets as he had Robin Uthappa (17) caught by Bipul Sharma, Manish Pandey (0) caught by Harmeet Singh and Mithun Manhas bowled for 31. Mascarenhas finished with bowling figures of 4-0-25-5 as the Pune franchise was bowled out in 19 overs.

Ashok Dinda knocked over Paul Valthaty (0) with the first delivery of the run-chase to send PWI fans’ hopes soaring about their team pulling off a dramatic win. But a 50-run stand between Adam Gilchrist and Shaun Marsh off 7.5 overs for the second wicket prevented the hosts’ innings from imploding.

Kings XI Punjab lost two more wickets as Gilchrist (21 off 17 balls) was caught by Steven Smith off Angelo Mathews in the eighth over, while Mandeep Singh (10) fell to Rahul Sharma with the score at 70 in the 12th over. However, with Marsh striking his first half-century (a 54-ball 64*) of IPL 2012 and Piyush Chawla contributing with a 24-ball 21*, Kings XI Punjab reached the target with 14 deliveries to spare.

Kings XI Punjab win by 7 wickets

Man-of-the-match: Dimitri Mascarenhas for his incisive bowling spell of 4-0-25-5

  • MoM: Dimitri Mascarenhas
  • Gilchrist: "Dimitri bowled a couple of great deliveries and he had great support behind him. The pressure from the ball and the field was excellent. The pitch did a lot, partly because of the storm last night, it won't be doing that much in the future."
  • Ganguly: "It was an important toss to win, we needed to play smart cricket and we didn't do that. We wasted our bowling attack by posting such a poor score, we need to be more sensible but we will learn from that."
