IPL 2012: Match 11, Delhi Daredevils v Chennai Super Kings

Delhi Daredevils captain Virender Sehwag tosses the coin as Chennai Super Kings captain MS Dhoni calls as Commentator Rameez Raja, Match Referee Ranjan Madugalle and a Competition Winner look on during match 11 of the the Indian Premier League ( IPL) 2012 between The Delhi Daredevils and the Chennai Superkings held at the Feroz Shah Kotla, Delhi on the 10th April 2012

The availability of Kevin Pietersen and Mahela Jayawardene worked wonders for the Delhi Daredevils as they stormed to an eight-wicket win against the Chennai Super Kings at the Feroz Shah Kotla Stadium. After limiting CSK to a paltry score of 110, an unbeaten 61-run stand between Pietersen and Jayawardene helped DD win with a little more than six overs left in the game.

CSK were hampered by an ordinary batting display, which saw some poor running between the wickets by their batsmen. After Virender Sehwag won the toss and opted to field first, as many as four CSK batsmen – Murali Vijay (0), Suresh Raina (17), S Badrinath (15) and Ravichandran Ashwin (8) – were run out thanks to some sharp fielding by the home team.

With Morne Morkel bowling four tight overs, which saw the South Africa pacer concede just 19 runs for two wickets, and Irfan Pathan and Umesh Yadav taking a wicket each, the defending champions could only muster a total of 110 for eight in 20 overs. An indicator of CSK’s mediocre batting performance was the fact that Dwayne Bravo (22) was the only batsman in their line-up to score more than 20 runs.

With the target looking very much within reach, the Daredevils raced away to a quick start with opener Naman Ojha hitting Albie Morkel for consecutive fours off the first three deliveries. Sehwag was quick to follow Ojha’s cue. The DD captain hit Morkel over deep extra cover for a six in his very next over.

Ojha (14) eventually became the fifth batsman to be run out in the match. A piece of miscommunication between Sehwag and him led to the latter’s dismissal in the fourth over with the score at 32. Sehwag (33 off 21 balls) followed Ojha a little while later, but not before he had helped Delhi reach the 50-run mark in the sixth over.

The loss of their openers didn’t deter DD much as Pietersen and Jayawardene complemented each other in a third wicket stand that didn’t allow the visitors any further inroads. Pietersen was his aggressive self as he muscled his way to a 26-ball 43* while Jayawardene’s well-paced 21-ball 20* provided the ideal foil to give the hosts a convincing eight-wicket win on the night.

The win pushes DD up in to third place in league standings, while CSK occupy the sixth spot.

Delhi Daredevils win by 8 wickets

MS Dhoni will be furious with the way his side ran between the wickets. His side couldn't get a partnership going as they consistently gave their wickets away, including four run outs!

  • MoM: Morne Morkel
  • Dhoni: "We posted a below par score. The wicket behaved well in the second half. We were looking to have a left and right hand combination but the run-outs never let us get that right. We have to be more consistent and look to play good cricket."

  • Sehwag: "Bowlers started off really well upfront and the left arm spinners took of from there. We've international class which has been boosted by the return of KP and Mahela. As a result of that, I can play freely."
