 Virender Sehwag, widely regarded as modern cricket’s most unfettered and productive batsman, scored an incredible 219 runs off 149 balls – the highest individual innings ever in the ODI format – against the hapless West Indies on an Indore belter. Take a look at the records cricket’s great entertainer broke along the way.

   


ü  Rahul Sharma became the 193rd player to represent India in ODIs.

ü  Virender Sehwag and Gautam Gambhir put on 176 runs for the first wicket – their fifth century opening stand.

ü  Virender Sehwag established a string of records during his innings of 219. The highlights:

ü  On 45, he made his highest score as India’s captain – beating 44 against Sri Lanka at Cuttack on December 21, 2009.


ü  On 82, he established the highest score by an Indian captain against West Indies in India, bettering Mohammad Azharuddin’s 81 at Chennai on October 23, 1994.

ü  On 100, he scored his 15th ODI hundred – his second against West Indies and his first as India’s captain.

ü  On 100, Sehwag also became the fastest to score an ODI hundred for India against West Indies, taking only 69 balls to do so. He bettered his own record of 75 balls (at Rajkot on November 12, 2002).

ü  On 106, he made the highest score by an Indian captain against West Indies, surpassing Rahul Dravid’s 105 at Kingston on May 18, 2006.

ü  On 115, he bettered his personal best against West Indies, which was 114 (unbeaten) at Rajkot on November 12, 2002.

ü  On 118, he made the highest score by an Indian batsman against West Indies in India, eclipsing Virat Kohli’s 117 at Visakhapatnam on December 2, 2011.

ü  On 119, he made the highest score at this ground, beating Yuvraj Singh’s 118 against England on November 17, 2008.

ü  On 128, he set a new record for highest score by any captain against West Indies, bettering Australia’s Allan Border’s unbeaten 127 at Sydney on February 6, 1985.

ü  On 142, he made the highest score by an Indian batsman against West Indies anywhere, improving upon Sachin Tendulkar’s unbeaten 141 at Kuala Lumpur on September 14, 2006.

ü  On 150, he became the fastest Indian to score an ODI 150, taking only 112 balls to reach the milestone. The previous fastest 150 for India was scored by Sachin Tendulkar off 118 balls (v South Africa, Gwalior, February 24, 2011).

ü  On 147, he made his highest ODI score on Indian soil, beating his 146 against Sri Lanka at Rajkot on December 15, 2009.

ü  On 153 he established a new record for highest individual score in India-West Indies ODIs, beating Desmond Haynes’ unbeaten 152 at Georgetown on March 21, 1989.

ü  On 174, he established a new record for highest individual score against West Indies in ODIs, bettering Australia’s Mark Waugh’s 173 at Melbourne on February 9, 2001.

ü  On 176, he established his highest ODI score, obliterating his 175 against Bangladesh at Mirpur on February 19, 2011.

ü  On 187, he established the highest score by an Indian captain in ODIs, surpassing Sachin Tendulkar’s unbeaten 186 against New Zealand at Hyderabad on November 8, 1999.

ü  On 190, he established the highest score by any captain in ODIs, beating Sanath Jayasuriya’s 189 against India at Sharjah on October 29, 2000.

ü  On 200, he became the second batsman to score a ODI double hundred after fellow teammate Sachin Tendulkar, who had also made an unbeaten 200 against South Africa at Gwalior on February 24, 2010.

ü  On 200, he also became the first player to score a triple hundred in first-class cricket, a double hundred in List A matches and a hundred in Twenty20 matches.

ü  On 201, he made the highest individual score in ODIs, surpassing Sachin Tendulkar’s unbeaten 200 against South Africa.

ü  On 219, he ended up with the third-highest score in a List A match after Ali Brown’s 268 (Surrey v Glamorgan,The Oval, June 19, 2002) and Graeme Pollock’s unbeaten 222 (Eastern Province v Border, East London, October 19, 1974).

ü  Sehwag’s 25 sixes equalled the existing ODI record for most fours in an innings. Sachin Tendulkar had also hit 25 fours during his epic 200*.

ü  Sehwag scored 142 runs in boundaries only (25 fours and seven sixes). There has been just one better performance in all ODIs on this count; Australia’s Shane Watson scored 150 runs out of his 185* against Bangladesh at Mirpur on April 11, 2011 in boundaries (15 fours and 15 sixes).

ü  Sehwag has now scored six ODI hundreds in 75 or fewer balls – the most by any batsman in ODI history. He goes ahead of Sri Lanka’s Sanath Jayasuriya who had five such 100s against his name.

ü  Out of the 15 ODI hundreds scored by Virender Sehwag, 14 have been in a winning cause. The only hundred in a losing cause was against New Zealand at Napier on December 29, 2002.

ü  India’s total of 418 for five was their highest ever in ODIs, bettering the 414 for seven they made against Sri Lanka at Rajkot on December 15, 2009. India’s previous highest against West Indies was 341 for three at Baroda on January 31, 2007.

ü  Incidentally, this was the fourth occasion where India posted a total of 400 or more. No other side has scored 400 on more than two occasions.

ü  Rahul Sharma took a wicket off his sixth ball in ODIs. He became the ninth Indian debutant to take a wicket in his first over in ODIs.

ü  Rahul took a wicket in each of his first three overs – all three came off his sixth ball and on all three occasions the victim was bowled. He became the first Indian debutant to take a wicket in each of his first three overs.

ü  The victory margin of 153 runs is India’s second biggest over West Indies after their 160-run win at Baroda on January 31, 2007.

ü  India have now won all the three ODIs played at Indore’s Holkar Cricket Stadium.
